Protein Per Dollar: Which Fast Food Chain Gives You the Most?

Protein is expensive. A pound of chicken breast at the grocery store runs $4-6. A tub of whey protein costs $0.75-1.50 per 25g serving. But what about fast food? When you are in a rush and need protein, which chain gives you the most bang for your buck?

We calculated the protein-per-dollar ratio for the best high-protein item at 30 major fast food chains. The results were surprising. Some budget chains crush premium fast-casual spots by a factor of 3x. Here is the data.

Key Findings

McDonald's McDouble is the King of Protein Value

At 8.2g of protein per dollar, the McDouble is not just the best fast food protein value. It is competitive with grocery store chicken breast (which delivers roughly 9-11g per dollar after accounting for shrinkage and cooking). For $8.37, three McDoubles give you 69g of protein. No other restaurant comes close at that price point.

Fried Chicken Chains Are Underrated

KFC and Popeyes both land in Tier 1, delivering over 7.5g of protein per dollar from bone-in chicken pieces. The bone-in format means you are getting real chicken with minimal filler, which translates directly into protein efficiency.

Premium Fast-Casual Is a Protein Tax

Sweetgreen (2.7-3.0g/$1) and CAVA (3.8-3.9g/$1) deliver less than half the protein per dollar compared to McDonald's or KFC. You are paying for organic ingredients, sourcing transparency, and ambiance, not for protein.

The Double-Protein Upgrade Usually Pays Off

At Chipotle, Qdoba, and Subway, the double-protein option typically improves your protein-per-dollar ratio. The upcharge is usually $3-4 for 24-28g of additional protein, which works out to about 6-8g per dollar for the incremental protein. That is Tier 1 or 2 efficiency.

Sides Are Almost Always a Bad Deal

Fries, chips, bread, biscuits, and cookies deliver 1-2g of protein per dollar at best. Every dollar spent on sides is a dollar not spent on protein. If you are optimizing for protein, skip every side and put that money toward the main protein source.

Fast food protein from top-tier chains is surprisingly competitive with grocery store options when you factor in the convenience of zero preparation time.
